Aerospace engineer awarded prestigious fellowship
WLWT highlights alumna Lynn Pickering
University of Cincinnati aerospace engineering alumna Lynn Pickering was interviewed by WLWT, highlighting her Zonta Amelia Earhart Fellowship Award.
Earning both her bachelor's and doctorate in aerospace engineering at UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science, Pickering was one of only 30 students worldwide to receive this prestigious award for the academic year. Established in 1938, the award supports students pursuing doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering and space sciences.
"This award has been really impactful," Pickering said. "I took some risks in my studies, and funding wasn't always the easiest thing. This scholarship was an incredible support at the perfect time."
The award is sponsored by Zonta International, an organization that aims to make a better world for women and girls through avenues including service projects and educational inititiatives, of which the Amelia Earhart Fellowship is a cornerstone.

Pickering was initially drawn to the University of Cincinnati by the expansive opportunities provided by the cooperative education program. As an undergraduate student, she was able to co-op in Germany with BMW for two semesters, kicking off her journey in international studies. Throughout her time at UC, she has studied in the United Kingdom, Belgium and Spain. Her doctoral research focused on artificial intelligence systems and making them safer, more trustworthy and understandable to humans. In her career, she hopes to contribute to interpretable AI models in the aerospace engineering field.
She will continue her research in Japan, where she has accepted a position as an assistant professor at the Osaka Metropolitan University.
